    Hi Kathy,

I was doing a web search for Dana Hayes and ran across your website. I just heard on the news this evening that she was missing and it struck a nerve with me because I live in Matteson with adjoins Park Forest where Ms. Hayes lives.

Has her story been covered in Chicago well? I’m guessing not because today, 11 days after her disappearance, I heard about it for the first time in the middle of the NBC5 news broadcast.

My first thought was dread for this poor woman and my second and almost instantaneous thought was, why is this just a blurb in the middle of a news cast 11 days AFTER she was missing!?

Anytime a woman, especially a mother, is missing it is headline news and often nationwide! Case in point, the missing Utah mother. But Ms. Hayes hasn’t even been a blip on the radar, for me anyway. That is why I wanted to inquire about her and if this was ever a major news story.

The reason I ask is because I find it deplorable that this woman is missing and that she is African American and it doesn’t seem to be a big deal to the media. You should know, I am a white woman. I am not an activist by any stretch of the imagination. I simply choose to judge people based on their character.

My point is that I just found it odd and unfair that Ms. Hayes is missing and it’s not front page news like other missing women have been from the Chicago area. It makes me wonder if the things I have heard in the past are right… “you have to be a white missing woman to get the media attention”?

Am I making a big deal out of this? Sometimes I tend to jump without thinking but I don’t want to ignore my instincts either. This is just something that jumped out at me this evening when I first saw the report on NBC5. Could you elaborate and let me know if you know of any other news coverage this woman has received? Is it because there wasn’t any foul play detected that this wasn’t a major story? Though, I don’t think foul play was initially detected when Stacy Peterson when missing either. And there still isn’t for that matter other than the idiot Drew Peterson.

This is the first time I have ever addressed anything like this so it could be me just making a mountain out of a molehill. I would appreciate your thoughts on the matter since you are a local girl and have posted about this woman.

    Thank you
    Angel Hernandez

Nope…her story didn’t garner national attention like the others you mentioned. It baffles me as well. I’m actively trying to get her national attention. Unfortunately, there always appears to be a disparity in coverage in missing persons cases. Thanks for wanting to get updated on the case. Please spread the word.

Forgive my typos in the above post… it was a bit hastily written.

  3. Le sigh. Kathy, I’ll be emailing you later. Brittany Holloway is 12 years old, last seen on 1/29/2010 getting in the truck of a stranger. I haven’t found one news article about her disappearance and don’t understand why there wasn’t more panic since 12 year old Jahmeshia Conner was just murdered in November 2009.
